Canon introduces Kokomo, their new VR platform they have recently been unveiling. The platform aims to allow users to use Canon cameras alongside a smartphone to converse within a virtual environment. The software currently only works with their recently released Eos R5 full-frame mirrorless camera. However, Canon continues to work on compatibility and additional features.

The main goal of the venture is to create a virtual location more immersive than existing video conferencing software. This would make their platform more desirable than Zoom or Skype, their direct competitors. Canon are aiming to make online communication more similar to the act of speaking to someone in person.

Although purchasing all the equipment required to use Kokomo right now would be incredibly expensive, it would be interesting to see this technology develop further and become cheaper.

This technologies implementation into more readily accessible products would definitely benefit the average consumer. An obvious use for the platform would be through smartphones, with 92% of the population already owning one. It would be interesting to see the platform work alongside our range of Ricoh THETA cameras.

Canon introduces Kokomo at a highly opportune time where working from home is more common than ever. It is easy to imagine how this new tech could be implemented to make corporate communication easier and more effective.
