Modern classrooms are increasingly recognising the importance of mental well-being alongside academic learning. Students need to be “ready to learn” when they walk into a classroom and this is not always the case. These students need time to adjust as they transition from either travelling into school or from breaks. Allowing them to have a quiet space to adjust is the key to helping them.
Students in SEMH settings often face heightened emotional regulation challenges — mindfulness and meditation can help develop calmness, focus, and resilience. Some schools may have a “sensory room” where the lights are not as bright, there’s calming music or its sound proof to all the outside hustle and bustle. This is a calm environment to help them regulate. Not all schools have one of these rooms, but they may have spare rooms for a short time and this is where VR comes in. It can turn any room into a “safe space” for students, at any time.
Meditation apps provide a safe, structured, and non-judgmental space for emotional decompression. Students can choose where they would like to go, a nice garden, the beach, space ect. They can listen to calming sounds or music, they can follow a deep breathing guide or just sit and enjoy the view! VR can be used for more than just learning or gaming, it can create an environment that allows people to feel safe and calm in times of need.
